What is your hometown, and where do you live today?

I am from Uruguay and I live in the city of Las Piedras in the Canelones department. I was born here and have always lived here.

Tell us about your work and your mission

I do several things! I started as a model and then began to study acting. Nowadays, I work in a TV channel, TV Ciudad, as a co-host in a show called Mira Montevideo. My mission in everything I do is to leave positive message, whether for trans people like me or people in the LGBT community.

In a few words, define what beauty means to you

I believe beauty is directly related to a person’s sense of empowerment. I think it has to do with someone’s feelings, attitude and all around love. A beautiful person is someone who lives their life with all of this—it gives them a powerful presence which is what attracts others.

Your gender transition began at the age of 14. What was this experience like for you?

My process did begin when I was 14 and it was anything but easy. In Uruguay and in all of Latin America, the realities that trans people face have been historically very difficult. In my country, things began to change recently as we fought for more rights. There was also a law that was passed three years ago that deeply improved the life of so many trans people.

My experience has been one of resilience. When I first started advocating for all of this, the setting was quite different. We didn’t have a lot of support from the civil society and there was little information out there—this has changed, but it still needs to change more. The conditions were very hard in the beginning, but it has changed a lot. When the law I mentioned previously was passed, I could not believe just how many people took action to support us. In another moment in time, I would have never thought that could be a reality. It really was something huge for the trans community in Uruguay.

You are the first trans model in your country. How were you able to get to where you are now?

Things kind of came to be through coincidences. I met certain people, like photographers, who believed I could do it and foresaw a future in the industry for me. They introduced me to the director of a prestigious agency, Montevideo Models, and that is where I had my start. Today, I work with another agency, Valentino Bookings. At first I was only doing runways and I wasn’t hired a lot for campaigns. I think this was because many brands weren’t as open to have trans representation in their campaigns.

That being said, everyone was very sweet with me in the fashion industry and I felt that I was included. I think there is still a lot of change that needs to happen in the modeling industry and to have someone like me as an image for a brand. There is still a lot that has to change, but I think we have already given the first few steps towards it and that is the important part!

Who are some of the brands that are working inclusively with trans models that you think are a great example?

I did a campaign for an Uruguayan denim brand called Letso jeans and they were really wonderful with me. Not only do they work with me, but also with other plus size models and a wide and inclusive range of people. I have also been an influencer for H & M on at least four occasions — which  was great for my career.

For runways, I have walked the catwalk for several brands at MoWeek which is the fashion week in Montevideo. I also did the catwalk for a beautiful brand here called Rotunda for two Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Uruguay.

What is your favorite inherited beauty lesson or practice, from your mother, family, culture?

There isn’t much of a self-care culture in Uruguay. Sometimes people are actually impressed when one shares that they take care of themselves, that you exercise, drink water, and use sunscreen. It isn’t so common here, but it is starting to grow.

Most of the self-care practices I use on myself I have learned because of my career: eating well, drinking lots of water, using sunscreen, taking care of hair and skin, saying no to excesses, and not smoking for example.

You have the most amazing skin! Walk us through your skincare routine.

Thank you! I love a simple routine. I use a hydrating lotion because heavy creams can clog my pores, it’s really more of  an emulsion that I use day and night. Something that I like to do when I have time is to massage my face with oil—I feel it relaxes my skin. I’m not sure what the benefits are, I just know that I feel better after doing it. I got the idea after seeing it all over social media.

Your favorite DIY home beauty practice?

Something that I enjoy doing and makes my skin feel great is applying cold things to my face. I love doing a natural tea with malva (mallow), chamomile and linden tea extract and then freeze it and use it on my face in upwards motions. I do this because I have rosacea, and it helps improve it.

One beauty ritual or product that you’re dying to try?

I love antioxidant oils for face massages.

A great wellness tip?

I think meditation is great—it’s important to stop and close our eyes and listen to our surroundings. Also to breath in a conscious way so that we can connect with the here and now. I find this especially important because sometimes we have our minds in the future or the past and to be in the present is so important to our wellbeing.

Something that I also like to do to feel well spiritually is to laugh. I try to always remember to say nice things to myself, especially when I get up in the morning. Happiness is an integral part of our day-to-day and our wellness.

How do you keep active?

I love to run in the mornings, although sometimes I don’t have the time because of work. Today I went out for a run—I usually do it twice a week, but would love to do it every day.
